Overview & First Impressions
The Tenable Rango B1120A4 is the showpiece trim of a four-model family that borrows its handle patterning from mosaic art and mathematics. Where the other three trims run 14C28N blades with black or rose gold finishes, the A4 steps up to a water ripple Damascus blade and pairs it with a matte silver aluminium handle. It is the version collectors reach for first, and it is also the one that proves this brand can build something genuinely handsome at a working price.
Materials & Construction
Damascus steel is the reason to choose this trim. The blade is pattern welded from layered alloys, then etched so the water ripple figure rises out of the surface as a flowing, wave-like banding that changes with the light. Beyond looks, pattern welded steel blends a hard, wear-resistant component with a tougher one, so the etched surface performs at least as well as a single-alloy blade of similar composition. Keep it dry and it stays bright; the visible pattern means maintenance becomes part of ownership.
Design & Details
The handle is where geometry meets decoration. Aluminium scales carry a repeating pattern inspired by tiling and math, and because the ridges and channels are milled rather than printed they double as real grip texture. Silver matte against etched steel gives the A4 a restrained, tool-like look that suits a knife intended for actual use. A Mohawk flipper and liner lock complete a package that stays at 7.92 inches open and 4.26 ounces in the pocket.
Real-World Use
On the job the Rango behaves like a compact work knife. The sheepfoot profile keeps the tip low for controlled draw cuts along cardboard, and the drop-through design means the knife sits deep in a pocket without printing. It is light enough for dress trousers and substantial enough to shave kindling for a fire. Natural patina on the Damascus develops slowly with use, which most owners consider a feature rather than a flaw, since it records how the knife has been carried.
Ownership Notes
Pattern welded blades ask a little more of their owners. Wipe the blade after any food or moisture contact, keep a thin film of oil on the etch and avoid storing it in a damp pouch for months. Sharpen on a fine stone with light pressure, because a heavy hand can blur the figure near the edge. The aluminium handle cleans with a damp cloth, and the liner lock needs only occasional flushing to stay smooth. Owners of other folding knives from Tenable knives will find the Rango shares the same flipper feel, which makes moving between models effortless.
Who Is This For?
The A4 is for the buyer who wants one folding knife that looks as good on a desk as it works on a box. It rewards collectors who appreciate pattern welded steel, gift buyers looking for something visually striking and anyone who carries a single knife rather than rotating several EDC knives. Buyers who want zero maintenance should choose the A1 or A3 instead, since those 14C28N trims demand far less attention.
Final Verdict
The Rango B1120A4 is the trim to buy if you want the family's best-looking blade without paying custom money. The water ripple etch is genuinely attractive, the aluminium handle feels precise and the mechanism is as crisp as any in the range. It is the kind of knife that starts conversations and still opens boxes. For the price of a mid-tier folder you get a piece that looks twice as expensive.
