Overview & First Impressions
Bestech has a habit of naming knives after things that sound like they belong on a chessboard, and the Emperor BT1703 and Dolphin BT1707 are two of the more interesting examples. Both are CPM-S35VN blades in full titanium frame locks, both sit in the upper-middle of the Bestech knives range, and both are built to the same standard. Choosing between them comes down entirely to which shape and carry style suits your hand and your pocket, and that is a much more interesting question than which one is technically superior.
Materials & Construction
The specification is effectively identical, which is the point. Both knives use CPM-S35VN hardened for a balance of edge retention and toughness, both use machined titanium for the frame with an integral frame lock, and both use titanium hardware and a machined clip. S35VN is genuinely stainless and takes a fine, aggressive edge that lasts well in everyday cutting, and it touches up easily compared with more wear-resistant premium steels. Whichever you choose, the material story is the same and the difference lives entirely in the design.
Design & Details
The Emperor is the broader, more substantial design: a wider blade with more belly and a handle that fills the palm, aimed at buyers who like a knife with real presence in the hand. The Dolphin is the slimmer, faster-looking option with a more tapered blade profile and a narrower handle that carries flatter in a pocket. Both have smooth, tuned actions with secure early lockup, and both are finished to the same standard. The Emperor reads as a working knife; the Dolphin reads as a gentleman's knife that can still work.
Real-World Use
In practical terms the Emperor's extra blade width and belly make it slightly better for slicing and for tasks where you want control at the tip, and its fuller handle is more comfortable during extended cutting. The Dolphin's slimmer profile makes it the better choice for a shirt pocket or a suit, and its lighter weight is noticeable over a long day of carry. Both handle the standard round of packaging, rope, tape and cardboard without drama, and neither is intended for heavy chopping. Which is more useful depends on what your day looks like.
Ownership Notes
Whichever you pick, ownership is the same and it is easy. S35VN will not rust in normal use, titanium does not corrode, and an integral frame lock has no replaceable liner to wear out. A drop of lubricant occasionally and a touch-up on a stone is the entire programme. Owners who already collect Bestech knives may well end up with both, because they occupy genuinely different niches in a carry rotation. If you only want one, handle them if you can, because the shape difference matters more than the numbers. Both sit comfortably among the better folding knives at this price, and the materials alone would justify either one. Collectors who already own several EDC knives may find they want both, since the Emperor and the Dolphin genuinely occupy different carry roles.
Who Is This For?
Choose the Emperor if you want a substantial, comfortable working folder with more blade and a fuller grip. Choose the Dolphin if you want something slimmer that carries unobtrusively in smarter clothing. Skip both if you need a hard-use or overbuilt knife, because neither is designed for that role. If you are new to premium folders, honestly either one is an excellent introduction to what S35VN and titanium deliver.
Final Verdict
These two knives are close enough that the decision is almost purely aesthetic and ergonomic, and that is a perfectly good basis for choosing a knife. Both are well made, well specified and pleasant to use, and neither will disappoint. Pick the shape you like looking at, because you will be looking at it every day.
