Wheel Building Tools and the QSP Dolphin QS161-A: Spoke Prep, Nipples and Nippy Cuts
QSP Dolphin QS161-A carbon fiber folding knife beside spokes and a truing stand

Overview & First Impressions

Wheel building is thirty-six identical operations performed in the right order. Lace, tension, stress relieve, true, repeat. The tools are a spoke wrench, a truing stand, a dishing tool and a tension gauge — none of which is a knife. But a wheel bench generates constant small cutting jobs, and the QSP Dolphin QS161-A has quietly become the blade that lives beside the stand.

Materials & Construction

QSP runs 14C28N here at 59 to 61 HRC, which is a sensible place to land: hard enough to hold a fine edge through rim tape and tubeless sealant, tough enough that a careless twist does not chip the tip. The blade is a mirror-finished clip point, 3.15 inches long, and the handle is carbon fiber at 102 grams all in. It is a light knife that does not feel cheap.

Design & Details

The liner lock is simple, which is what you want on a bench tool: no springs to gum up, no bar to collect rim dust. Ceramic ball bearings make deployment smooth enough to open one-handed while the other hand holds a spoke. The clip point gives a fine tip for starting rim tape and a belly for cutting housing. The carbon fiber handle resists sealant and cleaning solvents.

Real-World Use

A wheel bench needs a knife for cutting rim tape to length, trimming tubeless tape at the valve hole, cutting spoke nipples out of a seized wheel and opening parts bags. The Dolphin does all of it, and because it is light it rides in a jersey pocket on test rides. Most owners find it becomes a general folding knives carry rather than a dedicated shop tool.

Ownership Notes

Tubeless sealant is sticky and mildly alkaline; wipe it off before it dries. Blow out the liner recess after a wheel with a lot of rim dust. Sharpen at fifteen degrees on a 1000-grit stone and finish on ceramic, and the mirror finish will stay intact for years. Avoid prying nipples with the tip; use a proper spoke wrench and the knife will stay true. QSP knives has kept the Dolphin in the catalogue for years because wheel builders and bike mechanics keep buying it, and EdcMall stocks the carbon fiber version alongside the micarta and aluminum ones, so you can match the handle to the workshop rather than the photograph.

Who Is This For?

Buy it if you build or true wheels regularly, or if you want a light carbon-fiber folder for cycling kit. It also works well as a first premium knife because the geometry is forgiving. Skip it if you need a heavy outdoor blade. Buy it if your toolbox is small and your standards are not.

Final Verdict

The QSP Dolphin is a wheel builder's knife by accident and a good one by design. 14C28N at 59 to 61 HRC, a carbon fiber handle and a plain liner lock are the right answers for a bench that produces dust, sealant and cable offcuts. Light, sharp and cheap enough to actually use.
