Overview & First Impressions
Bestech runs some models in so many variants that the range becomes its own research project. The Fin BG34 is a good example: twelve trims across three handle groups, all built on the same 14C28N blade and the same liner lock chassis. That is a lot of choice for a single knife, and it is worth understanding what actually changes between them before you buy. As Bestech knives go this is one of the more accessible designs, and as an entry into EDC knives it is a forgiving place to start.
Materials & Construction
14C28N is the right steel for a knife at this level. It is a Swedish stainless grade with excellent corrosion resistance, good toughness and edge retention that comfortably beats budget stainless, and it takes a very fine edge with modest effort. Bestech finishes it in a black stonewash across the family, which hides the small scratches that accumulate with daily use. The G10 handles are the same glass-reinforced composite used across the line, unaffected by moisture or temperature and effectively immune to the abuse a pocket knife receives.
Design & Details
The variants group into three handle treatments, each offered in different colourways, and that is the entire decision. Mechanically every trim is identical: same blade, same liner lock, same action, same clip, same dimensions. That is good news for buyers, because it means you can choose purely on aesthetics without paying more for a mechanism you do not need. The blade shape is a practical drop point with a strong tip, and the liner lock engages early and consistently across the range.
Real-World Use
The Fin is a general-purpose folding knife in the truest sense. It opens boxes, cuts rope and strapping, breaks down cardboard and handles the hundred small jobs that come up in a day without needing to be babied. Because 14C28N is so corrosion resistant it tolerates being put away damp, which is more than can be said for the high-carbon tool steels on the market. The lightweight build means it disappears into a pocket, and the action is smooth enough to open one-handed without fuss.
Ownership Notes
Ownership is about as easy as a folding knife gets. A few passes on a ceramic rod keeps the edge fresh, water and a cloth keep the blade clean, and the G10 does not need any treatment at all. The liner lock is a simple, well-understood mechanism with nothing to adjust and no bearing to keep lubricated. Buyers comparing this against other Bestech knives will find the build standard identical across the range, and anyone assembling a first set of EDC knives will find the Fin a sensible starting point. Pick the colourway you like and you are done. Set against other folding knives in the same bracket, the Fin wins on maintenance rather than on specification, because 14C28N asks for almost nothing from its owner.
Who Is This For?
Buy it if you want a genuinely low-maintenance folding knife for everyday carry and you have a colour preference you want to satisfy. Buy it as a first proper folding knife, because 14C28N is forgiving and the mechanism is simple. Skip it if you specifically want a premium steel, a frame lock or a heavy-duty work knife, all of which Bestech offers elsewhere. Within its brief, the Fin is hard to fault.
Final Verdict
The Fin BG34 is a straightforward case of a good design offered in several finishes. Twelve trims is more choice than anyone needs, but the underlying knife is sound: sensible steel, tough handle, reliable lock and a price that leaves room for a sharpener. If you are choosing between the variants, choose on looks and buy with confidence.
