Overview & First Impressions
Charcoal burning is a week of watching a stack of wood smoulder and sealing every leak in the earth or the steel drum before air finds it. The knife in that job is a blunt instrument used hard: cutting sods, trimming roots, opening sacks of kindling, slicing cord and stripping bark. The Tenable Leviathan B1083A4 in D2 steel is the kind of folder that survives a week in the woods without pampering.
Materials & Construction
D2 steel is a semi-stainless tool steel with high chromium and enough carbon to hold an edge through dirty work. It is not fully stainless, so it will spot if left wet overnight, but it rewards a working edge like few other alloys and it eats abrasive bark and soil without rolling. Tenable knives pairs it with micarta, which grips when damp and does not mind being dropped in mud.
Design & Details
The Leviathan is a large liner lock with a broad drop point and a handle that fills a gloved hand. The blade stock is thick enough to split kindling with a baton and the grind is high enough to still slice rope, a combination that matters when one knife has to do everything at a kiln site. The micarta scales are contour-sanded, not polished, so they stay grippy when wet.
Real-World Use
At the kiln the knife cuts turf sods to seal a stack, trims roots out of the soil, opens feed sacks, cuts cord for the chimney and slices kindling. It also gets used to scrape bark and to pry a lid off a tin of tea. Among EDC knives marketed as hard users, the Leviathan is honest about its purpose: it is a work knife first and a pocket knife second, and it does not pretend to be light.
Ownership Notes
D2 needs a wipe. At the end of every day, clean the blade, dry it and put a thin film of oil on it, especially if the kiln is damp. Sharpen with a coarse diamond then refine on a 1000-grit stone; a polished edge is wasted on this work. Check the lock face monthly for wear. EdcMall carries the Leviathan in several handle options, and the micarta version is the one to take into the woods.
Who Is This For?
Buy it if you need one folder for rough outdoor work: kiln tending, allotment clearing, camp chores and firewood. It suits the charcoal burner, the coppice worker and the weekend bushcrafter. Skip it if you want a light knife for an office pocket, because this one is built to be used hard and carries like it.
Final Verdict
The Leviathan B1083A4 is a proper working folder. D2 takes the abuse that bark, soil and cord hand out, the micarta stays grippy in the wet, and the broad blade can be batoned without drama. It is not refined, and at a charcoal kiln refinement is the least useful quality a knife can have.
