About Designer

Nick Rogers, a knife enthusiast learning everything he can about knives. The joy of collecting lead to teaching himself 3D CAD software so that he could design knives with all the features he wanted and to find out what really goes into making a great knife. The goal of Nitch Designs is to create unique, purpose driven knives and products that enthusiasts like him would like to own and carry. He aims to provide other enthusiasts with attractive, performant knives at an affordable price.

Kansept Egress K1033B2 - CPM-S35VN Wharncliffe Front Flipper Folder

The Kansept Egress K1033B2 is a CPM-S35VN front flipper folder by Kansept Knives and designer Nick Rogers of Nitch Designs. A black stonewashed wharncliffe blade rides on ceramic ball bearings inside a slim shred carbon fiber handle, locked by a liner lock. It is a genuine working folding knife for people who cut every day - see the rest of the EDC all-products range at EDCMALL.

CPM-S35VN Blade Steel and Front Flipper Action

CPM-S35VN is Crucible's niobium-modified powder metallurgy stainless, run here at 58-60 HRC. The niobium carbides are finer than the vanadium carbides in CPM-S30V, which buys noticeably better toughness and easier sharpening for a sliver of wear resistance - exactly the trade a working folder wants. The front flipper tab and the large blade cutout give two independent ways to open the blade, both usable with either hand. Compare it against the CPM-S35VN folder range, tougher 154CM blades and the harder-wearing M390 and D2 options in our folding knife collection.

Why the Egress Belongs in Your Pocket

  • CPM-S35VN wharncliffe blade at 58-60 HRC for strong edge retention with easy maintenance.
  • Shred Carbon Fiber handle with a slim profile that disappears in a pocket.
  • Liner Lock mechanism - strong lock-up with one-hand release.
  • Front flipper tab plus a large blade cutout for two ambidextrous opening methods.
  • Ceramic ball bearing pivot for a light, glassy, fidget-friendly action.
  • 8.24 in overall with a 3.47 in blade - full-size cutting in a slim frame.
  • 4.06 oz / 115 g carry weight with a black stainless steel pocket clip set for tip-up right carry.
  • Nick Rogers / Nitch Designs geometry: wide blade, straight edge, purposeful proportions.

Best Uses for the Egress

  • Everyday carry cutting: boxes, mail, zip ties and packaging film.
  • Camp and hike food prep where a full 3.47 in flat-ground edge matters.
  • Workshop and warehouse breakdown of cardboard, cord and light banding.
  • Urban utility tasks where a reverse tanto or wharncliffe point stays controllable.
  • Collector rotation as a Nick Rogers design with a coated or satin blade.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Egress open?
Two ways, both ambidextrous: roll your index finger over the front flipper tab on the blade spine, or hook a thumb into the large blade cutout near the pivot. Ceramic ball bearings make either method a light flick.

What is the difference between a liner lock and a nested liner lock?
Both use the same spring strip behind the blade tang. On a nested lock the strip sits in a milled pocket inside the scale, which lets the handle run slimmer with no exposed spring edge to snag.

Why is the blade steel only 58-60 HRC?
Running S35VN a little softer than its maximum is deliberate. It trades a small amount of edge holding for toughness and grindability, so the edge resists chipping and comes back quickly on a water stone.

Can the pocket clip be moved for left-hand carry?
No. The Egress clip is fixed for tip-up right-hand carry; the front flipper and blade cutout are ambidextrous even though the clip is not.

CPM-S35VN vs. Common Premium Pocket Knife Steels

Steel Typical HRC Edge Retention Corrosion Resistance Toughness Sharpening Ease
CPM-S35VN (this knife) 58-60 Very Good Very Good Better Moderate
CPM-S30V 58-60 Very Good Very Good Good Moderate
CPM-20CV 59-61 Excellent Excellent Fair Difficult
M390 60-62 Excellent Excellent Good Difficult
154CM 58-61 Good Good Very Good Moderate
D2 Tool Steel 58-61 Very Good Fair Good Moderate
14C28N 59-61 Good Excellent Good Very Easy

CPM-S35VN is Crucible's niobium-modified powder metallurgy stainless. The niobium carbides are finer than the vanadium carbides in S30V, so S35VN gives up a sliver of raw wear resistance in exchange for noticeably better toughness and easier sharpening - which is exactly what a working frame-lock folder wants. HRC figures are typical mill ranges, not a guarantee for any single blade.

Glossary of Key Terms

Nitch Designs
The studio of Nick Rogers, a self-taught designer who learned 3D CAD specifically to build purpose-driven knives for enthusiasts rather than for a catalogue.

Nick Rogers
The designer credited on the Egress. His goal with Nitch Designs is attractive, high-performance knives at a price working users can actually justify.

Kansept Knives
A Chinese production knife brand that partners with independent designers and ships their work with premium steels and tight machining tolerances.

CPM-S35VN
Crucible's niobium-modified powder metallurgy stainless. The niobium carbides are finer than the vanadium carbides in S30V, so S35VN trades a sliver of wear resistance for better toughness and easier sharpening.

Liner Lock
A strip of spring steel inside the handle that snaps sideways behind the blade tang when the blade opens. One thumb of the closing hand releases it, keeping fingers out of the blade path.

Nested Liner Lock
A liner lock whose spring strip sits in a milled pocket inside the scale rather than standing proud of it. The result is a slimmer, snag-free handle with the same lock-up.

Front Flipper
A small tab on the blade's spine just forward of the pivot. Rolling your index finger over it breaks the detent and swings the blade open without moving your grip.

Blade Cutout
The large hole milled through the blade near the pivot. It gives a second, ambidextrous way to open the knife and removes weight without weakening the spine.

Ceramic Ball Bearings
Hard ceramic balls riding in races either side of the pivot. They cut friction dramatically, so a light flick is enough to open the blade and the action stays glassy for years.

Reverse Tanto
A tanto with the point-ground front section on the spine-side and a strong straight edge below. It keeps a usable point while adding material where a tip would otherwise snap.

Wharncliffe
A blade whose straight cutting edge runs all the way to a low, centred point. Maximum control on a draw cut, and a point that is nearly impossible to break off.

Canvas Micarta
Linen or canvas cloth laminated in phenolic resin and sanded back. It absorbs sweat and oil, so grip improves with age instead of getting slick.

Shred Carbon Fiber
Carbon-fiber offcuts shredded and re-pressed with resin into a marbled sheet. Every handle patterns differently, so no two knives look identical.

Jade G10
G10 fiberglass laminate that is left translucent rather than dyed opaque, giving the pale sea-green depth that collectors call jade.

Who Should Buy the Egress

  • Everyday carriers who want a real working edge in a slim, 4 oz class folder.
  • Front flipper fans: the Egress has one of the most generous tabs at this price.
  • Buyers who value a mid-premium powder steel over a budget stainless.
  • Left-handed users who need ambidextrous opening even if the clip is right-side only.
  • Collectors completing the Nick Rogers / Nitch Designs lineup.

Who Should Skip It

  • Left-handed carriers who insist on a reversible pocket clip - the Egress clip is fixed.
  • Hunters or tradespeople who need a piercing drop point; this is a straight-edge utility blade.
  • Users who want a featherweight knife - at 4.06 oz the Egress is built, not hollowed out.
  • Anyone wanting a hard-use pry tool; no folding knife should be levered on.
  • Buyers who prefer an easy-to-sharpen budget steel over a powder metallurgy one.

Care & Maintenance

  • Wipe the blade dry after every session; CPM-S35VN is strongly stainless but pocket sweat still speckles bare steel over weeks.
  • Blow pocket lint out of the liner-lock channel and pivot recess so lockup stays early, tight and consistent.
  • One drop of light knife oil at the pivot and along the lock bar monthly, then cycle the blade a dozen times so it spreads.
  • Sharpen at a consistent 15-20 degrees per side on a diamond plate or water stone; S35VN at 58-60 HRC grinds predictably.
  • Finish on a fine ceramic rod or a loaded leather strop with light pressure - heavy passes round the apex you just set.
  • Keep rose gold coated blades away from abrasive scrubbing and harsh solvents; the PVD layer is the corrosion shield and the colour.
  • Wash G10, Micarta and carbon-fiber scales with warm water and a soft brush; packed grit wears the grip texture smooth.
  • Never pry, twist or use the tip as a screwdriver; side loads chip tips far faster than any cutting task.
  • Re-torque the pivot and the steel pocket clip screws every month or two with the correct Torx driver.
