Bestech Duoz BG65H Review: Damascus and Red Burl Wood Done Right
Bestech Duoz BG65H folding knife with acid-etched Damascus blade and red burl wood handle

Overview & First Impressions

The Duoz has been Bestech's value-priced design exercise for a while, and the BG65H is the version that stops pretending to be a work knife. Ostap Hel's outline is intact: an 84.8 mm blade, 2.4 mm thick, opening to 191.8 mm overall and closing to 107 mm. What changes is the material story. An acid-etched Damascus blade sits over a red burl wood handle, and the whole thing weighs 54.5 grams. For anyone building a collection around pattern rather than utility, this is the Duoz to buy.

Materials & Construction

Damascus steel here is a layered billet, etched to reveal the fold pattern, and every blade differs slightly because the etch depth follows the layers. That is the appeal and the responsibility: the surface is not a coating, so it wants drying after wet work and a thin film of oil before storage. The red burl wood is stabilised, which means it will not swell in humidity or crack in a dry room, and the grain is sealed under a matte finish that shows fingerprints far less than polished wood does.

Design & Details

A ceramic ball-bearing pivot does the opening work, and the liner lock is the simple, proven type Bestech has been making for years. There is no flipper tab on this variant, so deployment is via the thumb stud, which suits the narrow blade. The handle is a straight, neutral shape with a slight palm swell, and the clip is a deep-carry design that keeps the knife low in a pocket. At 54.5 grams it disappears, which is the entire point of a knife this size.

Real-World Use

This is a pocket knife for people who cut things in front of other people. Opening mail, trimming a thread, slicing a pear at a desk, cutting the foil on a bottle: the Duoz handles all of it without looking like a weapon. The Damascus etch will dull slightly where it contacts a cardboard edge, which is normal and reversible with a re-etch. The burl is warm in the hand in cold weather, unlike titanium or aluminium. It is a knife that gets complimented rather than questioned.

Ownership Notes

Care is the whole ownership story. Wipe the blade after anything acidic, oil it monthly with a light mineral oil, and keep the pivot dry. Do not put it in a dishwasher, and do not leave it in a damp sheath. Among folding knives at this price the wood fit is unusually tight: the scales meet the liners without a visible gap. EdcMall stocks the matching BG65G with olive wood if red is too loud for your taste, and both take the same replacement hardware. One last comparison worth making: against the plain 14C28N Duoz, this version costs more and delivers less edge retention, so buy it for the pattern rather than the performance. Among Bestech knives, it is the one that gets handled most and used least, which is a perfectly good reason to own a knife at all.

Who Is This For?

Collectors of Ostap Hel designs, gift buyers who want something that looks expensive without a custom price, and anyone who wants a light folder that is pleasant to handle. It is not the knife for a job site, and it is not the knife for a saltwater boat. For a desk drawer, a jacket pocket or a display shelf it is close to ideal.

Final Verdict

The BG65H gets the material pairing right, which is rarer than it sounds: Damascus that is properly etched, wood that is properly stabilised, and a frame simple enough to keep the price sane. Buy it as a light-use folder you will enjoy owning, and treat the blade as the decorative surface it is. It is the kind of knife that makes a collection feel considered.
