Description

The Kansept Nettle T1103A2 represents designer Derek Sharon's vision of combining predatory precision with everyday practicality. Inspired by the hunting prowess of an owl, this folding knife balances aggressive aesthetics with comfortable, reliable performance. The blade features USA-made 154CM stainless steel, renowned for exceptional edge retention and durability. A gray TiCN coating provides scratch resistance and enhanced longevity, ensuring your knife maintains its performance through demanding use. The front flipper mechanism with jimping enables rapid one-handed deployment, while the reliable liner lock system keeps the blade securely locked during operation. Ergonomic design defines the Nettle's handling. Blade grooves and spine serrations create a stable, non-slip grip that performs reliably even in challenging conditions. The lightweight blue anodized aluminum handle combines durability with aesthetic appeal, while the diamond texture surface guarantees a secure hold in wet environments. Derek Sharon, an aviation machinist and lifelong outdoorsman from Kansas, drew inspiration from nature and his deep involvement in the knife community to create this design. His passion for hunting, foraging, and exploration directly influenced the Nettle's practical yet sophisticated character. Whether you're an EDC enthusiast, outdoor adventurer, or knife collector, the Nettle delivers precision engineering with thoughtful design that honors both function and form.

Kansept Nettle T1103A2 — 154CM Tanto Liner Lock Folder

The Kansept Nettle T1103A2 is a slim liner lock folder that reads like a dress knife and works like a tool. The 3.28 in tanto blade is 154CM at 58-61 HRC, flat ground at 3.0 mm and finished gray TiCn coated - a format that puts a thick, unbreakable point on a blade that still slices cleanly. The Blue Anodised Aluminium with Diamond Texture handle keeps the whole knife at 3.38 oz despite the 7.61 in overall length, and the liner lock is simple, proven and serviceable. It is part of the Kansept Nettle line drawn by Kim Ning, and it sits well beside our Kansept knives and EDC collection.

154CM: The Balanced High-Carbon Stainless

154CM is the American high-carbon stainless that most premium folders were measured against for twenty years, and it still holds up. At 58-61 HRC it sits in the sweet spot: enough wear resistance to hold a working edge through a week of boxes, enough toughness to survive a careless cut, and no high-vanadium chippiness. It grinds on ordinary bench stones, which matters more over a decade of ownership than any lab number. See how it stacks up against Damascus, 14C28N and D2 in the table below.

Why the Nettle Belongs in Your Pocket

  • 154CM blade at 58-61 HRC - the classic American high-carbon stainless, balanced across wear, toughness and corrosion resistance.
  • Tanto profile: a straight primary edge for slicing plus an angled tip that will not snap off.
  • 3.0 mm flat-ground stock on a 3.28 in blade - thin enough to cut, thick enough to lean on.
  • Liner lock with a crisp detent: one-handed open, one-handed close, nothing to go wrong.
  • Blue Anodised Aluminium with Diamond Texture handle gives grip without bulk, holding the knife at 3.38 oz.
  • 7.61 in overall with a slim profile - it carries like a much smaller knife.
  • Twin thumb studs for a reliable roll-open with either hand.
  • Reversible pocket clip so left-handed carry is not an afterthought.

Best Uses for the Nettle

  • Everyday carry in dress trousers or a suit pocket, where a slim profile matters more than bulk.
  • Opening mail, breaking down boxes and cutting tape - the tanto edge handles all of it.
  • Camping and hiking as a light second knife that will not weigh down a pack.
  • Food prep at a picnic or campsite where stainless steel is the sensible choice.
  • Collector carry for anyone who appreciates a patterned or dressed-up blade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Nettle a flipper?
No - it opens on twin thumb studs with a smooth detent. Nothing protrudes from the spine when the knife is closed.

What is the difference between T1103A1, A2, A3 and A4?
A1 runs a stainless Damascus blade on twill carbon fibre and G10. A2, A3 and A4 run 154CM in gray TiCn, rose gold coated and rose gold coated finishes on blue diamond-texture aluminium, silver diamond-texture aluminium and olive green diamond-pattern G10 respectively.

Is Damascus steel strong enough to use?
Stainless Damascus built from a 9Cr / 440C stack performs close to a good mono-steel blade in normal use. It is not a pry bar, but nothing about this knife is.

How hard is 154CM to sharpen?
Moderate. It grinds predictably on a diamond plate or a decent water stone and finishes cleanly on ceramic - far easier than CPM-20CV or S90V.

Does the pocket clip swap sides?
Yes. The clip remounts for left- or right-handed tip-up carry.

154CM is the classic American high-carbon stainless: roughly 1.05 percent carbon with chromium and molybdenum. It balances wear resistance, toughness and corrosion resistance without the chippy edge of a high-vanadium super steel, and it responds well to ordinary bench stones. HRC figures are typical mill ranges.

Glossary of Key Terms

Derek Sharon
The designer behind the Nettle: a slim, straight tanto on a narrow handle that reads like a dress knife until you put it to work.

Tanto Blade
A blade with a straight primary edge meeting a second, angled edge at the tip. That geometry puts a thick, unbreakable point on a blade that still slices cleanly.

Liner Lock
A spring steel bar inside the handle that snaps behind the blade tang on opening; press it sideways with your thumb to fold the knife closed.

154CM
A high-carbon, molybdenum-bearing stainless at 58-61 HRC. Balanced wear resistance, toughness and corrosion resistance with none of the chippiness of a high-vanadium super steel.

Stainless Damascus
Pattern-welded steel built from a 9Cr / 440C stack, then acid-etched to reveal the layers. It keeps the corrosion resistance of its parent alloys and patterns differently on every blade.

Diamond Texture Anodised Aluminium
A knurled diamond relief rolled into the aluminium scale, then anodised so the grip pattern and the colour are one and the same.

Twill Carbon Fibre / G10 Composite
A layered handle that sandwiches woven carbon fibre cloth over G10 - light, rigid, weatherproof and far more stable than wood.

Diamond Pattern G10
G10 laminate pressed with a fine pyramid relief so the scale bites into the palm even with wet or oily hands.

Who Should Buy the Nettle

  • You want a slim folder that looks correct with a jacket and still cuts all day.
  • You like tanto geometry and want a strong point rather than a needle tip.
  • You prefer a liner lock you can service yourself over a complicated proprietary mechanism.
  • You want Damascus or 154CM - not a budget stainless - for a reasonable price.
  • You carry left-handed and are tired of clips that only swap one way.

Who Should Skip It

  • You want ceramic bearings and a drop-shut fidget action.
  • You need a knife for prying, scraping or batoning: the tanto point is strong, not indestructible.
  • You expect a rustproof blade you never have to wipe. Damascus in particular wants oil.
  • You dislike thumb studs and will only buy a flipper.
  • You want a heavy, thick-spined hard-use folder - the Nettle is deliberately slim.

Care & Maintenance

  • Wipe the blade dry after every use - 154CM is stainless but pocket humidity still speckles bare steel over weeks.
  • One drop of quality knife oil at the pivot and liner contact monthly, then cycle the action to spread it.
  • Blow pocket lint out of the handle channel with compressed air before oiling so grit never grinds in the pivot.
  • Sharpen on a diamond or quality water stone; 154CM at 58-61 HRC grinds predictably and takes a keen working edge.
  • Use light, consistent strokes and finish on a fine ceramic or leather strop - heavy pressure rounds the apex.
  • Rinse with warm water and mild dish soap when it gets grimy, then dry thoroughly before it returns to the pocket.
  • Never pry, twist or use the tip as a screwdriver; the tanto point is built for slicing, not leverage.
  • Keep the diamond-texture aluminium scale clean with a soft brush; packed grip texture traps pocket grit.
  • Check the pocket clip screws every month or two with the correct Torx driver.
