Tenable Kryo T1001 Review: Kim Ning's Full-Size Crossbar Folder
Tenable Kryo T1001V11 folding knife with 14C28N drop point blade and G-mascus handle

Overview & First Impressions

Kim Ning designed the Kryo as a full size working folder, and the spec sheet reads accordingly: a drop point blade in 14C28N, a bar style lock, and a handle program that runs from G10 to ultem to twill carbon fiber. The V11 wears G-mascus, a layered laminate that looks like forged material. Among EDC knives that combine a bar lock with a full four finger handle, the Kryo is one of the more straightforward options.

Materials & Construction

14C28N is the right steel for a knife intended for outdoor and utility work: it resists staining, takes a keen edge, and stays tough when ground thin. Tenable knives keeps the blade geometry versatile with a drop point that has enough belly for slicing and enough straight edge for push cuts. The handle materials vary by variant, and the ultem and PEI options in the family are the most interesting of the group.

Design & Details

The Kryo's handle is the part that separates it from a generic bar lock folder. There is a pronounced forward groove, a thumb ramp with jimping, and a slight palm swell that puts the hand high behind the pivot for control. The crossbar lock is fully ambidextrous and reachable without shifting grip. The blade sits centered between liners that have been skeletonized to keep the weight reasonable.

Real-World Use

This is a knife that handles a full day without asking for attention. The drop point opens packaging, cuts rope, and preps food at a campsite, and 14C28N comes back to a working edge on a ceramic rod in under a minute. The bar lock makes one handed closing easy with gloves on. We inspected a Kryo from EdcMall stock and found no blade play in any direction and a smooth, consistent action.

Ownership Notes

Two things worth knowing. First, the bar lock channel collects lint faster than any other part of the knife, so blow it out monthly if you carry it in a pocket with fabric lining. Second, 14C28N will still spot if you leave salt water on it, so a rinse and dry after coastal use is worth the ten seconds. Keep the pivot oiled lightly and the action stays smooth.

Who Is This For?

Buy it if you want a full size bar lock folder for outdoor and utility work without paying titanium money. It suits campers, hikers, and anyone who prefers an ambidextrous lock. It also makes a good first bar lock knife because the action is forgiving and the steel is easy to maintain. Skip it if you want a compact urban carry.

Final Verdict

The Kryo is a well executed working folder rather than a showpiece. 14C28N gives it real edge life, the bar lock gives it speed and ambidexterity, and the handle geometry gives it control under load. Kim Ning's design does not try to be clever, and that is exactly why it works as a daily carry.
