Overview & First Impressions
Not every knife needs to be a conversation piece. The Grampus is a straightforward D2 folder with a G10 handle and a liner lock, sold at a price that makes it a sensible second or third knife. Three variants, all black G10, all D2, all built to the same honest standard. It is the kind of knife that ends up in a glovebox for a decade and still works.
Materials & Construction
D2 is a semi-stainless tool steel with high chromium and high carbon, which gives it wear resistance well above its price class. It will patina and it will spot if you leave it wet, but it holds an edge through cardboard like a much more expensive steel. G10 handles are effectively weatherproof, and the liner lock is stainless with a well cut tang that engages early and wears slowly.
Design & Details
The blade has a broad drop point with a stonewash and satin combination finish, thick enough at the spine to feel substantial and thin enough behind the edge to cut. The handle is shaped with a finger groove and a slight flare at the butt, and there is jimping on the thumb ramp and the flipper tab. The clip is a standard metal bar, positioned for tip-up right hand carry, and it is reversible on most variants.
Real-World Use
This is a working knife. Cutting hose, rope, cable ties, cardboard, strapping and plastic packaging are all well within its comfort zone, and the D2 edge survives a week of that without a touch up. It is heavier and thicker than a titanium folder, which makes it better for rough handling and worse for dress carry. It is also the knife you hand to a coworker without worrying about what comes back.
Ownership Notes
D2 needs a little discipline: wipe it dry after wet use, put a thin film of oil on it if you live near the coast, and do not leave it in a damp toolbox. Sharpening takes diamond or ceramic because of the vanadium content, but the edge lasts long enough that it is a rare job. Keep the liner lock face clean and the pivot oiled, and the knife will outlast the glovebox it lives in. For a blade in D2 steel with a liner lock, the price is the whole argument; Bestech knives at this tier are built to be used, and among folding knives it is the one I would keep in a truck ahead of the EDC knives that cost twice as much.
Who Is This For?
Buy it as a beater, a truck knife, a range bag knife or a first locking folder that will not be mourned if it disappears. It suits tradespeople, gardeners, campers and anyone who wants capability rather than collectability. Skip it if you want premium steel, light weight, or a knife that looks refined on a desk.
Final Verdict
The Grampus is the definition of a good value folder: real D2, real G10, a liner lock that engages properly and a price that makes sense. Bestech builds a lot of knives at this tier and this is one of the better ones because nothing is compromised in a way that affects use. EdcMall stocks all three variants if you want a spare for the truck.
