Stabilized Wood & Resin: Bestechman Cicada's Wing W-Series Expands

The Cicada's Wing W-series already impressed me with its warmth and lightness, thanks to handles of natural olive wood and desert ironwood. Now, Bestechman has introduced two new variants—the BMK06-W-5 and BMK06-W-6—that take the natural aesthetic in a new direction. Both feature handles made from a wood and resin composite, a material often called "stabilized wood." This process infuses resin into natural wood, creating a handle that's more durable, color-fast, and resistant to moisture, while retaining the unique grain of the original wood. I've been carrying both, and they share the same excellent core: a 3.15-inch 10Cr15MoV blade with a black PVD finish, the smooth B-Lock, and a lightweight build (now 2.47 ounces). The difference is in the unique patterns of the stabilized wood, making each knife one-of-a-kind.

The Shared Foundation: Proven Performance, Enhanced Durability

Both the W-5 and W-6 share the same trusted platform. The blade is 3.15 inches of 10Cr15MoV steel with a durable black PVD coating—sleek, non-reflective, and corrosion-resistant. The slim 2.3mm blade thickness makes it an excellent slicer. The B-Lock is ambidextrous and smooth, with thumb studs on both sides. The deep-carry clip is reversible. The key advancement is the handle: a wood and resin composite. This material is heavier than natural wood (hence the 2.47-ounce weight) but significantly more impact-resistant and stable. It won't swell or crack with humidity changes. The resin also allows the wood's natural grain to pop with depth and clarity.

BMK06-W-5: The Dark and Mysterious Pattern

The BMK06-W-5 features a handle with deep, rich tones. The wood grain is darker, with hints of brown and black, swirled and locked in translucent resin. It has an almost petrified or fossilized look—ancient and sophisticated. The black PVD blade complements the dark handle perfectly. This is the version for those who prefer a more subdued, mysterious aesthetic. It feels both rugged and refined, like a tool that belongs on a modern explorer's belt.

BMK06-W-6: The Lighter, More Vivid Pattern

The BMK06-W-6 offers a brighter, more vibrant take on the stabilized wood concept. The handle features lighter woods and perhaps different resin tints, resulting in a more vivid, contrasting grain pattern. The colors are warmer and more pronounced, with the translucent resin adding depth and shine. Against the black PVD blade, the lighter handle really stands out. This version feels more artistic and eye-catching. If you want your EDC knife to be a conversation starter with a unique, glowing handle, the W-6 is a fantastic choice.

Comparing the Two: Unique Art, Same Great Tool

Both knives deliver the same excellent Cicada's Wing performance: slim, capable, and reliable. The choice between the BMK06-W-5 and BMK06-W-6 is purely about which handle pattern speaks to you. Because each handle is made from natural materials, every single knife is unique. You're not just buying a tool; you're acquiring a small piece of functional art. The stabilized wood construction means this art is also more durable than natural wood alone, ready for years of daily carry.

Final Thoughts: A Brilliant Evolution

The W-5 and W-6 represent a smart evolution of the Cicada's Wing line. They retain all the qualities that make the platform great—the slim profile, the solid B-Lock, the capable 10Cr15MoV steel—while introducing a handle material that's both more durable and more visually striking than natural wood alone. Whether you're drawn to the dark, ancient look of the BMK06-W-5 or the bright, artistic vibe of the BMK06-W-6, you're getting a knife that's as unique as you are.
