Bone Carving, Netsuke Scale and the Phase Objects Hanya Bead
Phase Objects Hanya custom brass and sterling silver lanyard bead for knives

Overview & First Impressions

Netsuke were carved toggles, small enough to sit in a palm and detailed enough to hold a story, and the discipline they imposed was scale: work only as large as a thumb and make every millimetre count. The Phase Objects Hanya bead is judged by that same standard. It is a limited 2026 release cast in brass with sterling silver accents, built as a lanyard bead rather than an ornament.

Materials & Construction

Brass is a casting metal that takes fine detail and then develops a patina that records handling, which is why it suits a carved form better than a plated finish would. Sterling silver accents provide contrast without introducing a second corrosion mechanism, since both metals age in compatible directions. The bead is substantial in the hand without being heavy on a cord, and the casting quality shows in the crispness of the features under a fingernail.

Design & Details

The Hanya mask is a demon form from Japanese theatre, and the design question is whether a face that small reads at arm's length. It does, because the features are exaggerated rather than miniaturised: deep eye sockets, a wide mouth, and horns that break the silhouette so the shape is identifiable in profile. The bore is drilled straight through the crown so the bead hangs correctly, and the silver sits where wear would otherwise erode the detail.

Real-World Use

Fitted to a folding knife the bead changed how the knife felt in the hand, because the extra mass at the tail balances a long handle and gives the pinkie something to locate. In a pocket it stayed tight and the brass darkened evenly over two weeks, which improved the definition of the carving rather than obscuring it. On a lanyard beads collect scuffs quickly, and this one took them without losing detail.

Ownership Notes

Small carved objects reward a specific kind of looking. A netsuke is not examined from one angle, it is turned, and a good one has something to say from every side. That is a demanding brief for a production bead, and the test is whether the back is finished. Check the underside of any cast bead before buying: unfinished backs are how makers hide cost, and finished ones are how they earn trust. EdcMall photographs these beads on a knife so the scale reads honestly, because a bead that looks large alone can vanish on a handle. Collectors of custom EDC knives tend to buy the bead last and notice it first.

Who Is This For?

This suits collectors of handmade beads and anyone who wants a knife to feel finished rather than accessorised. It rewards people who enjoy patina and do not polish their gear. It does not suit buyers who want a bead that looks new forever, and it is not the cheapest way to add a lanyard, which is exactly the point.

Final Verdict

The Hanya bead is a small object with a large amount of intent in it. Brass and silver, a carved face that reads from any angle, and a limited run that will not be repeated. Put it on a knife you actually carry and it becomes the detail people notice before they notice the blade.
