Nextorch rStar - Four-Source Tactical Helmet Light with 850 nm IR
The Nextorch rStar is a four-source tactical helmet light with white, red, green and 850 nm infrared output. A 360 degree gooseneck aims the beam without moving your head, and a single AA cell keeps it running when resupply is the hard part. Mount it to a helmet ARC rail, MOLLE webbing or Velcro and you have hands-free lighting plus IFF signaling in one unit - it sits alongside the rest of the Nextorch range and our tactical flashlight and EDC light collections at EDCMALL.
White, Red, Green and 850 nm IR in One Helmet Unit
Four emitters cover four different jobs. White floods a room or a treeline; red preserves your night adaptation and reads as a low signature to anyone watching; green shows map detail better than red while keeping your pupils dilated; and 850 nm infrared is invisible to the naked eye but bright through night-vision goggles, so you can illuminate a scene for yourself without giving your position away. The gooseneck holds position, so you can aim the beam down at your hands or out at the terrain without tilting your head. Power comes from a single AA - the most widely stocked battery on earth. For head-worn work lighting rather than tactical IR, the Nextorch headlamp range and Fenix headlamps are the natural comparison; for helmet rails, look at the Nitecore headlamp range too. Everything is in our flashlight collection.
Why the rStar Belongs on Your Helmet
- Four light sources: white, red, green and 850 nm infrared.
- 360 degree flexible gooseneck for precise beam positioning.
- IR output for covert night-vision work with NVGs.
- Mounts to helmet ARC rails, MOLLE webbing and hook-and-loop platforms.
- Runs on a single AA alkaline or Ni-MH cell.
- Independent rotary and push-button switching between visible and IR modes.
- High-strength impact-resistant polymer housing built for recoil and rough handling.
- Hands-free tactical utility that leaves both hands for the job.
Best Uses for the rStar
- Night operations lit for yourself but not for the other side.
- Night navigation and map reading under red or green output.
- IFF signaling with prescribed visible or IR patterns.
- Search and rescue work where both hands must stay free.
- Vehicle and building checks with a helmet-mounted task light.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is 850 nm infrared for?
It is an IR illuminator for use with night-vision goggles. To your naked eye the output is essentially invisible, but through NVG it lights the scene clearly, so you can work covertly without a visible signature.
Why green instead of white for map reading?
Green light keeps your pupils dilated better than white and shows contour lines and print more clearly than red. Red remains the choice for pure dark adaptation; green is the compromise for detail work.
Which batteries does it take?
One standard AA cell, alkaline or Ni-MH. That is deliberate: AA cells are stocked everywhere, so a resupply problem never takes your light out of service.
Will it fit my helmet?
The rStar mounts to ARC rails, MOLLE webbing, hook-and-loop surfaces and brim clips. If your helmet has any of those, it will mount. The flexible neck lets you position the beam regardless of where the mount lands.
Can IPX7-level lights be used in the rain?
The rStar's polymer housing is built to shrug off rain and field abuse. Always dry and grease the battery compartment seal, and remove the AA cell for long-term storage so a leaking cell cannot damage the contacts.
Glossary of Key Terms
NextorchA Chinese law-enforcement brand supplying duty lights since 2005; the Star series covers helmet and head-mounted systems.
Helmet Light
A light clamped to a helmet rail or MOLLE webbing so both hands stay free - standard equipment for search, rescue and vehicle work.
850 nm Infrared
Near-infrared output that is invisible to the naked eye but bright through night-vision goggles. It lets you work covertly with NVG.
IR Illuminator
An IR-only emitter used with night vision. It lights a scene for your goggles without giving away your position to anyone without NVG.
Green Light
Green preserves night vision better than white and shows map detail more clearly than red, which is why it is the standard map-reading colour.
Gooseneck Arm
A flexible, position-holding arm. It lets you aim the beam without turning your head or moving the mount.
ARC Rail
The accessory rail on the side of a ballistic helmet - the standard mounting interface for lights and ear protection.
MOLLE Webbing
The horizontal strap grid sewn onto tactical vests and pouches, used here to mount the light body off a helmet.
IFF Signaling
Identification Friend or Foe: flashing a prescribed colour or IR pattern so friendly units can identify you without radio traffic.
AA Battery Platform
Runs on the most widely stocked battery on earth. When logistics break down, AA cells are everywhere.
Who Should Buy the rStar
- Military and law enforcement users running night-vision equipment.
- Search and rescue teams that need hands-free illumination plus IR.
- Operators who want visible light and IR on one helmet mount.
- Anyone whose logistics plan depends on AA batteries.
- Airsoft and training users who want a realistic helmet light setup.
Who Should Skip It
- Everyday carry users - this is a helmet-mounted system, not a pocket light.
- Buyers who want maximum throw; the rStar is a task and signaling light.
- Anyone wanting USB-C or lithium-ion charging in the unit itself.
- Users who need a flood beam for close-up inspections; the oStar does that better.
- People without night vision equipment - the IR emitter will be unusable to them.
Care & Maintenance
- Wipe the body and lens with a soft dry cloth; fingerprints on the reflector cost you real candela.
- Clean the lens with a microfibre cloth only - paper towels and shirt tails leave micro-scratches that scatter the beam.
- Keep the switch threads and O-rings lightly greased with silicone grease so the seal stays watertight, never petroleum jelly.
- Inspect the O-ring for nicks whenever you change or charge the battery, and replace it before it fails in the field.
- Run the light at full output for a few minutes each month so the cell is exercised and you can spot a fading battery early.
- Charge lithium cells before they hit empty; storing a Li-ion pack at 3.6-3.8 V gets you far more cycles than full discharge.
- For AA-powered lights, pull the cell out of the body for long-term storage to rule out leakage damage.
- Do not use the strike bezel for everyday prying; nano-ceramic beads are hard and brittle under lateral shock.
- Store the light switch-locked or with the head backed off a turn so it cannot switch on and drain the cell in a bag.
