The greatest feature of this knife which is movable clip system that called "Concealed clip system". We have originally produced the concealed clip system to eliminates the uncomfortable feeling of the "clip feel" when gripped the handle. However, it turns out that a part of the mechanism of this "concealed clip system" conflicts with US patent Nos. 8,112,894 and 8,783,141.
We have bee licenced to use the US patents after negotiations with Mr. Joseph Caswell, the US patent owner.
The process is the same like for DLC coating, but some moments are different. The oven is heated to 400 degrees Celsius, making the surface hardness close to a diamond, approximately Hv3000. The thickness of the coating is just 0.3 Microns. Also we use this special coating to the titanium handle of the knife, with the reason - this coating color has beautiful gradation.
Please notice: The coating color will be a little bit different for each handle.
ZDP189 Blade Introduction
ZDP-189 is a high-carbon, high-chromium powder metallurgy steel renowned for its extreme hardness, often exceeding 64 HRC, which delivers peerless edge retention and aggressive cutting performance. This performance comes at a cost; its massive carbide volume makes the steel notoriously difficult to sharpen and increases brittleness, posing a risk of chipping under heavy lateral impact. Furthermore, while technically stainless, its high carbon content necessitates diligent maintenance to prevent oxidation, making it a specialized choice for precision cutting tasks rather than rough, heavy-duty utility.

Q1: How long does the ZDP-189 steel blade on the Rockstead RYO stay sharp? A: Thanks to Rockstead's precision heat treatment, the RYO’s ZDP-189 core reaches an incredible 67 HRC. With regular EDC use, this mirror-polished edge can maintain its razor-sharpness for 2 to 3 years before needing a touch-up, vastly outlasting standard premium knife steels.
Q2: Can I sharpen the Rockstead RYO H-ZDP at home? A: It is strongly discouraged to sharpen it at home unless you are an expert. The RYO features a Honzukuri (convex zero-bevel) grind. Standard sharpening stones or guided systems will scratch the flawless mirror finish and ruin the edge geometry. We recommend using Rockstead's official sharpening program.
Q3: How do I access Rockstead's free lifetime sharpening service? A: Every RYO knife comes with a unique serial number. Once you receive your knife, register it on the official Rockstead website. This unlocks their free lifetime maintenance and regrinding service. You only need to pay for the shipping and handling to their factory in Japan.
Titanium coloring reacts to oil, so even if the color of the handle changes, there is no problem on the product. When wiping it with alcohol or neutral detergent attached to the tissue, it becomes the original bright color.
