Sao Knives was founded in 2022 as an independent cutlery workshop based in Sichuan, China. Like many knife enthusiasts who eventually become bladesmiths, its founder, Max Sao, followed a similar path. Max was once an avid collector of folding knives—his collection at its peak included hundreds of pieces from brands like Spyderco, Benchmade, and Cold Steel. Yet his true passion always lay with those small, lockless, naturally aged pocket knives featuring bone handles—particularly classic models from GEC, Queen, and Northwood.

Over time, however, he noticed a persistent issue: while beautiful, these vintage-style knives struggled to fit into modern daily life. Their pinned construction prevented handle customization, their slipjoint mechanisms felt stiff, and their overall design seemed more suited for display than regular use—like museum artifacts meant to be admired, not carried.

“I don’t want to merely replicate the past,” Max realized. “I want to bring tradition into the present.”

Thus, Sao Tools was born—not with grand declarations, but with a simple, heartfelt mission: to craft pocket knives that retain the soul of vintage designs while embracing the functionality and reliability of modern engineering.

Like most designers, Max’s journey has been one of study, refinement, and innovation. The result of this iterative process is the “Fei Lanny,” launched in 2025—a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic “Lanny” pocket knife. The “Fei” (meaning “fly”) in its name doesn’t refer to speed, but rather to a sense of lightness and freedom. It ditches traditional pinned construction in favor of a reinforced steel liner with dual-sided, user-replaceable scales—allowing owners to swap between materials like stag horn, mammoth ivory, walrus tusk, or black ebony, effectively giving the knife a new “outfit” whenever desired.

Moreover, it replaces the traditional slipjoint mechanism with a modern back-spine flipper—one of today’s most popular opening systems—paired with a precision-tuned washer pivot system (not ball bearings) to achieve smooth, crisp deployment without sacrificing structural tightness. For a handcrafted knife, striking this balance is no small feat—but the Fei Lanny delivers.
