Kansept Baku K1056: Damascus, Titanium and a Coast Guard Veteran's Design
Kansept Baku K1056A4 with Damascus blade and titanium G10 handle liner lock

Overview & First Impressions

Baku is a spirit in Japanese folklore that eats dreams, which is either a great name for a bedside knife or a warning about your credit card. Greg Schob designed it — a Coast Guard veteran turned custom maker — and the K1056 pairs a Damascus blade with a titanium and G10 handle and a liner lock. Four variants, including a Timascus version that is the most ornate knife in this batch.

Materials & Construction

The A4 runs a Damascus blade with a titanium frame and G10 scales, while the A8 pairs S35VN with a Timascus handle for people who want the full showpiece. Both use a liner lock housed in a stainless liner, which keeps the profile slim compared to a frame lock. The Damascus is a real pattern-welded billet, so the figure runs through the steel rather than sitting on the surface, and the titanium adds rigidity without much weight.

Design & Details

The blade is an elegant drop point with a long swedge and a fine tip, more hunting knife than tactical folder. The handle is the interesting part: a sculpted titanium bolster flowing into textured G10, with a finger groove and a slight butt flare. It is a design with more curves than most Kansept models, and the transition between materials is executed cleanly enough to justify the price.

Real-World Use

This is a knife for careful work and good company: slicing food, opening mail, trimming leather, feather sticking on a camping trip, cutting cord. The fine tip is excellent for detail and unsuitable for prying, and the Damascus will etch if you leave citrus juice on it. As a collector piece that occasionally gets used, it is exactly right. As a jobsite beater, it is the wrong purchase entirely.

Ownership Notes

Damascus needs drying, oiling and no polishing. Wipe it after every use, keep a light film of oil on the flats, and never scrub the pattern with an abrasive pad. The liner lock interface should stay clean and lightly greased so engagement does not creep. If you own the Timascus variant, store it separately from keys and coins, and handle it with clean hands to keep the colour shift even. Damascus steel from Kansept knives has a reputation for clean pattern control and this one shows it; among folding knives that double as collection pieces it is the most traditional, and for EDC knives with a bit of theatre it is hard to beat.

Who Is This For?

Buy it as a collection piece or a gift for someone who appreciates pattern-welded steel and designer provenance. It suits the collector filling a Kansept shelf and the person who wants a Damascus folder that is not a wall hanger. Skip it if you need a user knife, if you dislike maintenance, or if you want a fast one handed action.

Final Verdict

The Baku is the most traditionally handsome knife in this batch, and the Schob design gives it a lineage most Damascus folders lack. Titanium and G10 with a liner lock is a lighter, slimmer package than a full frame lock, and it carries accordingly. EdcMall stocks the Damascus variants alongside the Timascus A8 for anyone who wants the full statement.
